Weekly Update Meetings - Piccadilly Street

The City of Winchester will hold weekly update meetings throughout the duration of the final phase of construction on Piccadilly Street.  Meetings will be held at 9:00 a.m. in the Exhibit Hall (4th floor of City Hall) every Friday morning and are open to the public.  City staff will be available at the meetings to answer questions about the project and address concerns about the construction.

Phase II Updates

Friday, January 8, 2010 Update
1/8/10 News Release

The City scheduled weekly update meetings throughout the duration of this final phase.  Public Services Director Perry Eisenach summarized the current activity:

• Between Loudoun and Cameron Streets: Shenandoah Gas is replacing their gas main on the north side of the street.  Then, they will replace the gas service line to each building on the north side of the street only.  This work is expected to last three (3) weeks.
• Between Braddock and Washington Streets and between Cameron and Kent Streets, the City’s contractor, DLB, Inc., is replacing water mains.  This work is expected to last approximately two (2) weeks.  Following the installation of the new water main, the water and sewer service lines to each building will be replaced.

Phase I Updates

October 23, 2009

This afternoon, the final concrete base was poured for the sidewalk base. This activity concludes the underground utilities infrastructure improvements on Cameron and Braddock Streets in Winchester. The City’s contractor DLB, Inc. met the October 24, 2009 deadline a day ahead of schedule.

• Below is the target paving schedule for next week (October 26-October 30). Every attempt will still be made to keep one lane open to allow for traffic movement during the paving (dates are subject to change if we have bad weather, break downs, etc.):
  Monday - leveling course on Cameron Street from Cork Street to Fairfax Lane.
• Tuesday - final layer of surface course of asphalt on Cameron Street from Cork Street to Fairfax Lane.
• Wednesday - tie-in surface course of asphalt at the corner of Braddock Street & Cork Street for cross walks.
• Thursday-Friday -tie-in the other intersecting streets along Braddock Street.
  
  

On the first weekend in November (if weather allows), the City will celebrate the end of the Cameron and Braddock Street phase of the Downtown Utility Infrastructure Improvement (DUII) project and dedicate the two-way traffic.

Be on the look out for the upcoming citizen survey! The City wants to know your thoughts about the DUII project and how we can improve for Phase II of the project. Phase II of the DUII project will include Piccadilly Street. This phase will not begin until after the holidays on January 4, 2010.

October 13, 2009

• The final paving on Braddock Street is occurring this week!!  The brick sidewalks on Braddock are nearing completion.
• All the new water main installation is complete on Cameron.  All the remaining underground utility installations should be completed this week.
• The contractor is working diligently to complete all the concrete work and patching all the trenches with asphalt before their deadline which is the end of next week.
• The signal contractor is working on activating the new traffic signals on Braddock and Cameron.
• We are still on schedule to convert Braddock and Cameron to two-way traffic before Thanksgiving.  Additional details will be provided as we get closer to the two-way conversion.  Our current plan is to make the conversion on a Saturday/Sunday in November.
• Work on Piccadilly Street is scheduled to begin January 4.

 

August 31, 2009

The progress on the project the past month has been excellent and we are still on schedule to complete the work on Braddock and Cameron by October 24.  On Braddock Street, crews are finishing the installation of the storm drain pipe between Amherst and Piccadilly which is the final component of the underground infrastructure on Braddock.  On Cameron Street, all of the underground utility installation south of Cork has been completed.

The photos below show the base layer paving on Braddock Street which occurred this week.  This is certainly a welcome sight by everyone and sign that we are getting closer to completion.

The installation of the new sidewalks on Cameron Street started in earnest the past two weeks.  Already, the new sidewalks have been installed between Gerrard and Monmouth.  The end of July marked the halfway point regarding the schedule to complete the work on Braddock and Cameron by the end of October.  The photos below show the new sidewalks on Cameron.

July 20, 2009

Work on the project progressed very well the past two weeks and the project remains on schedule to have the work completed on Braddock and Cameron by the end of October.  The new sidewalks on Braddock Street are shaping up very nicely and have moved all the way from Handley Blvd. to almost Cork Street.  The photos below show some of the initial brick-strip and all brick sidewalks along Braddock.

July 6, 2009

We hope everyone had a happy and safe 4th of July.  Crews took Friday afternoon off so that they could spend the long weekend with their families.  The past two weeks on the project were very productive as the water line replacement on Cameron Street has been completed almost to Cork Street and work started on the sidewalk replacements on Braddock Street.  In addition, crews bored and installed the steel casing pipe under Town Run that will be used to install the new water main under the stream.

June 22, 2009

Work on the storm drainage infrastructure started last week.  Once the storm drainage infrastructure is installed (where necessary), the sidewalk replacements can begin in that area.  Overall, crews completed another successful week and the project remains on schedule.

June 15, 2009

The relentless rains continued (we’re not complaining because we need the rain) through the week, but the construction crews continued with their excellent progress.  The first section of water main on Braddock Street was successfully pressure tested and disinfected which allowed for the water service line replacements to begin.

The photos below show a new water service line comprised of copper tubing that is connected to the new ductile iron water main.

June 8, 2009

The contractor completed installing the water main on Braddock Street all the way to Cork and successfully completed pressure testing the new water main between Gerrard and Germain.  Work on Cameron is nearing the intersection of Clifford.  Crews are definitely hoping to see the sun more this week than they did last week!

The photos below show some of the old water pipes in the ground that have been removed and truly show the need for this project.

June 1, 2009

In spite of a short week (crews took Memorial Day off) and rain every day during the week, the construction crews still accomplished a significant amount of work.  In addition to the City’s work, crews from Shenandoah Gas also started relocating the gas mains near the Cork/Cameron intersection so that the City can install new storm drainage infrastructure.

May 25, 2009

A beautiful week of weather allowed the contractor to make excellent progress throughout the week.  The new water main installation started on Cameron Street and continued on Braddock.  With the successful completion of the Soap Box Derby on Saturday, crews will now be able to proceed rapidly down the hill on Cameron towards Cork.

May 18, 2009

Work on installing a new water main on Braddock Street started last week as seen in the photos below.  Work also continued on replacing sanitary sewer laterals and manholes on both Braddock and Cameron.  The weather during the week was fairly good for construction and the contractor made excellent progress.

Construction Kicks Into High Gear

The first full week of construction last week proved to be a successful one.  Construction crews became acclimated to working in downtown Winchester and drivers on Braddock and Cameron quickly learned to merge into one lane with minimal traffic backups.

Construction Begins!

In spite of receiving some much needed rain, construction “officially” started today! The initial work as seen in the photos below consists of replacing sanitary sewer laterals from the building to the sewer main in the middle of the street.
