Lord Fairfax Community College (Lord Fairfax Community College)
Lord Fairfax Community College is located in Middletown approximately 20 miles south of Winchester. LFCC offers two-year programs for an associate degree in Art and Sciences and Applied Science, Career Studies Programs, and Certificate Programs. Old Dominion University offers several bachelor and master’s degree programs via live satellite television at both the Middletown and Faquier campuses of LFCC.

Medical

A 411-bed, non-profit, regional referral hospital, Winchester Medical Center offers a full range of medical, surgical, diagnostic and rehabilitative services to some 400,000 residents in the tri-state area. Winchester Medical Center employs more than 2,900 people and has a medical staff of over 275 physicians, representing nearly every specialty. The Medical Center’s six-story facility, completed in 1990, anchors a 165-acre medical campus, which includes two physician office buildings, cancer center, pharmacy, outpatient diagnostic center, same-day surgery facility, imaging center with MRI, CT and Mobile PET scanning, adult psychiatric center, 250-seat conference facility, employee child care center, restaurant, parks with walking trails, and a 1,600 space parking deck.

Winchester Medical Center is a subsidiary of Valley Health Systems, a nonprofit organization of health care providers serving residents of the northern Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, West Virginia and western Maryland.

Recreation

Winchester and the surrounding area provide ample opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Jim Barnett Park is an approximately 180 acre public park. Some of its amenities include lighted softball and baseball fields, indoor and outdoor swimming pool facilities, racquetball court, fitness room, lighted horseshoe courts, lighted basketball courts, a three acre fishing lake, playgrounds, picnic areas and shelters. Other features include a a twelve station fitness trail, a Paracourse Fitness Trail, and a BMX Dirt Bike Racing Trail.

The surrounding area provides opportunities for hiking and biking in the nearby state park, national park, and national forest and canoeing and fishing on the Shenandoah River.

Highway System

Winchester is served by I-81 east/west, U.S. routes 11 (north-south), 50 (east-west) and 522 (northwest-southeast), and VA Primary 7 (east) and VA Primary 37(western bypass). Winchester is also less than 20 miles from I-66, providing direct access to Washington, D.C. and the I-95 corridor. The average commute time for a resident of Winchester is about 20 minutes.

Rail Service

Rail service is provided by CSX Transportation and Winchester & Western which provides connecting service between CSX and Norfolk Southern.

Airport Service

Winchester Regional Airport offers a 5,500’ runway, a modern terminal with weather service, and U.S. Customs service (on call). Jet A and 100 LL fuel is available. Aircraft rentals and flight training are available. Limo and auto rental are available on site. Inland Port

The Virginia Inland Port (VIP), just west of Washington, D.C., and about 20 miles south of Winchester, is 220 miles inland and effectively brings the benefits of The Port of Virginia 220 miles closer to U.S. markets. Five-day-a-week rail service between the VIP and the marine terminals in Hampton Roads allows direct access to the trade routes of 75 international shipping lines.

Public Transit

Winchester Transportation provides public transportation through a fixed route bus system and a paratransit service for the handicapped. Six routes cover all areas of the City and portions of Frederick County. Operating hours are 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. There is also a trolley service operating to provide senior citizens mobility to selected destinations.
