Frequently Asked Questions

Program Overview

The City of Winchester, Virginia provides weekly collection of refuse from households and small businesses. Refuse is collected twice weekly in Historic Downtown Winchester.

When is my trash day?

Your day for refuse collections depends on where you live. Contact us at (540) 667-1815 or e-mail us at the link below to find out the schedule for your neighborhood.

Please set your trash near the curb by 7:30 AM on your refuse collection day but no earlier than 6:00 PM the evening before collection. Please try to remove your empty trash can(s) from the curb on the same day as your collection.

What about grass leaves, brush, and other yard waste?

Yard waste such as grass clippings, brush, leaves, hedge trimmings, etc. are collected on WEDNESDAYs throughout the City from mid-April through mid-January. No yard waste will be accepted with the refuse. Please place yard waste in cans or PAPER lawn bags and bundle/tie all brush into four-foot sections. Yard waste cannot be accepted in plastic bags.

Is there a fee for refuse collection?

There is no direct charge for either refuse or recycling collection. The program is financed from the general tax fund. Even though you don't see a bill, you are paying for it. The more you recycle, the less the program costs taxpayers.

Is there a limit on the amount of trash collected?

Yes. A maximum of THREE (3) containers (bags or cans) will be collected at each household or business. The three container limit should not be a problem for residents that recycle and use the Wednesday collection of yard waste. Businesses that produce more than three containers must use a private hauler for their refuse.

What about furniture, appliances, and other bulky items?

Bulky items such as furniture and appliances are collected by special arrangement throughout the year. For fees and other information regarding our bulky item collection service, contact us.

Instead of throwing away good appliances, furniture, and other household items, visit our "unwanted Items" page to find charities that would like them. You will also find out how to get rid of all kinds of other "unwanted items " in the Winchester area.
