The Winchester Fire and Rescue Department responded to a structure fire at a townhouse in the 2900 block of Sorrell Court this morning, extinguishing its flames within ten minutes.
The call came in at approximately 10:43 a.m., with all four Winchester stations responding to the blaze by 10:48 a.m. Upon arrival to the scene, firefighters observed heavy smoke coming from the front of the house and large flames swallowing the back of the house. No residents were in the townhouse at the time, and one pet was successfully rescued from the scene.
Although the adjoining townhouse was affected, firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading through the shared wall. The resident of the adjoining townhouse escaped without injury and was given oxygen at the scene.
The investigation revealed that the fire was caused by “discarded smoking materials in or too close to combustibles.”
The Winchester Fire and Rescue Department would like to thank the fire companies of nearby jurisdictions for their quick response and assistance at the scene.
