Dog Tags
All dogs four months and older that are located in the City are required to wear a dog tag. Tags for each year go on sale April 1st and must be displayed on the dog by May 1st.
When registering your dog, you must present a valid rabies certificate. If the vaccination has expired, proof of a current vaccination will be required.
A City Dog Tag also identifies your pet if he is lost or picked up by animal control.
NOTE: The City Treasurer's Office has sent over 2,600 "Reminder Notices" to dog owners that dog tags went on sale April 1st. The Code of the State of Virginia was changed and it is now mandatory for the Tresurer to send the notice annually.
Unfortunately, the City has no way of knowing if you still have the dog for which you previously bought a tag. Please inform us if you no longer have the dog listed on the notice so that we may update our records and not send future notices.
Dog tags must be purchased by April 30th to avoid a late penalty.
