Change Clocks Sunday, Change Smoke Alarm Batteries

Winchester Fire & Rescue encourages the community to get into the habit of changing smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries during daylight savings time.  It’s a simple and worthwhile habit to start.  When you set your clocks forward one hour Sunday, March 9th at 2 am, remember to also change your detector batteries.

Public Reporting More Scams Via Phone

The Winchester Police Department is warning local residents about two phone scams that are targeting people in our area.  One caller says he is from the “My Windows Support Technical Maintenance Department” and is calling about a problem with your computer.  He asks you to log on to your computer so he can fix the problem.  When asked where he is calling from the individual states he’s in Miami, Florida.  He has been known to say, “go to your Windows computer and I will show you what I’m talking about.”  This is a scam in which they access your personal information off your computer or they

Open House scheduled and feedback requested for National Avenue Project

Later this year, the City of Winchester is planning to construct some significant improvements that would realign sections of National Avenue, East Lane and Piccadilly Street.  These improvements will improve safety on this major roadway into downtown and allow for the installation of landscaping enhancements.
To allow the public the opportunity to stay informed, ask questions and provide feedback on this major project, the City will host an informal Open House on Tuesday, March 4th on the 4th floor of Rouss City Hall.  Feel free to come any time between 4:00-7:00 pm.

The Old Town Winchester Welcome Center is looking for enthusiastic and engaging members of the community to volunteer as Welcome Center Concierge.  As a Concierge, volunteers will have the opportunity to welcome visitors to downtown Winchester and provide information to help create a memorable experience, assist community members in learning about upcoming events and getting engaged in Old Town, and to support the overall mission of the City of Winchester local government.

Self Defense Classes Offered by WPD

The Winchester Police Department is offering two Women's Self Defense classes. The Women's Self Defense II (Advanced) class will be held on March 25th from 6 - 9 p.m. The Women's Self Defense I (Basic) class will be held April 15th from 6 - 9 p.m. The classes are held at the Timbrook Public Safety Center.

Questions about Local Mailing

Local residents have been receiving a letter from Home Emergency Insurance Solutions referencing their water service line. 
The company, which is located in Connecticut, is selling water line insurance protection.  Some Winchester residents have asked if the mailing is coming from the City of Winchester and have expressed concerns to officials in City Hall.   As the letter states, Home Emergency Insurance Solutions is “an independent company separate from your local utility or community” and is not affiliated with the City local government.

Number of Accidents Decline in the City

The Winchester Police Department has sent a message to residents and visitors of the city to take their personal safety seriously when behind the wheel, and statistics show the message is being heard.  According to statistics that meet Department of Motor Vehicles reporting standards in 2013 there was a 34 percent decrease in traffic crashes in Winchester from 2012 to 2013.  There were no fatal accidents in 2013 and crashes involving injury dropped 36 percent.  Alcohol related crashes involving injury fell 92 percent from 2012 to 2013.  Crashes that resulted in injury and were found to be s
