What is a RDF? In recognition that City of Winchester residents support our department through their city taxes, the City offers residents a discounted fee (RDF). Non-residents pay the regular fee for lessons, training classes, and rentals.

Indoor Aqua Fitness Class Schedule

These classes focus on strength, flexibility, and reducing pain with low impact on your joints. Training may incorporate resistance tools such as water weights and noodles. Classes offered throughout the year are Water Aerobics and Aqua Arthritis. Classes are taught by a certified instructor. Ages 18+.

  • Beginning the week of 5/29, Water Aerobics moves to the Outdoor Pool.
  • Due to the Indoor Pool being closed for maintenance 5/27-6/9, Aqua Arthritis resumes on TU 6/13 with the new time of 11am - 12pm (still Indoors).

Pool Rules

This facility has eight 50-meter lanes in the main pool and six 25-yard lanes in the diving well (depth varies from 3.5 feet to 11.5 feet). The main pool also has a 30-foot tall tube slide and a one-meter spring board. The zero depth entry baby pool includes a water feature (maximum depth 1.5 feet).

2023 Outdoor Pool Rentals

The Outdoor Pool can be rented for parties. Rates listed are for the two hour rental. 2 weeks notice is required. Set-up can begin 15 minutes before the start time and the pool is cleared 15 minutes prior to the end time.

Splash Bash  Fun in the Sun  July 3 Celebrations  Cardboard Boat Regatta

9th Annual Splash Bash: Let’s open the outdoor pool with a splash! Come enjoy the slide, the diving board, and our excellent wading pool. A DJ will be playing your favorite music and food will be available for purchase at the concession stand. New this year... Come out and experience what it is like to be a scuba diver with Scuba Buddys, who will be on-site during the event. You will have a chance to win door prizes throughout the event, including free visits to the pool!

Fun in the Sun: Get ready for Fun in the Sun, a family-friendly event for all ages! On Saturday, June 24 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. the Jim Barnett Park Outdoor Pool will become an inflatable playground. Race to the end of the floating obstacle course, paddle around in bumper boats, and little ones can play all day in the toddler-appropriate inflatable. Gather your family and friends and finish the day at our photo booth and take a print home with you! Snacks will be available at the concession stand. No lap lane will be available during this event and the baby pool will be open as usual. Life jackets are the only flotation device allowed in the pool; a limited number will be available. No inflatables from home are allowed. Pool closes to the public at 4:30 p.m.

July 3rd Pool Party & Community Fireworks: Come out and celebrate Independence Day at the pool. A DJ will be playing your favorite music and food will be available for purchase at the concession stand. Fireworks display to follow starting at approximately 9:20 p.m.

Cardboard Boat Regatta: Calling all shipbuilders! We challenge you to design, construct, and navigate boats made entirely of cardboard across the blue seas of the outdoor pool. Compete in teams of two, but only one rower needs to register. All rowers under the age of 10 can participate at the lifeguard’s discretion (WPRD staff decisions are final). A limited supply of cardboard, duct tape, and scissors will be provided. Rules and further clarification will be emailed to participants after registration has ended. 

Swim Under the Stars: Experience the pool at night and swim under the stars! Food will be available for purchase at the concession stand.

Luau Dollar Theme Day: It’s Luau Dollar Theme Day at the Outdoor Pool! On Friday, August 4, 1-6:30 p.m., entrance is just $1 per person if dressed in the tropical theme. Special Guests Island Style Luau Entertainment will provide a Polynesian dance show at 2:00 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. and offer the opportunity to guests to dance, too. Pay the Daily Visit Fee or use your membership if you don’t want to dress up.  

Swim in Movie: Swim up for a movie at the pool! Food will be available for purchase at the concession stand.

All Paws on Deck Canine Swim: The pups rule the pool in our final splash of the summer! On Saturday, September 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., bring your furry friends out for the All Paws on Deck Canine Swim. Complete with music and local pet-related vendors and demonstrations, All Paws on Deck is fun for the whole family! Swimming is just $5 per dog and humans are free. While you’re here, check out the Dog Park – a gem in the Winchester community. All attendees MUST provide proof of rabies vaccination for entrance.

SUMMER - Group Swim Lessons (Ages 9 months-14; Adult Lessons Ages 18+)

Note: All lessons are subject to minimum student enrollment and instructor/pool availability. Make up classes are not offered unless class is cancelled by WPRD. All swim lessons are provided at the Indoor Pool.

Swim Lessons University is a child-centered, progressive swim lesson program. Each level teaches a specific set of skills that each child will need to master before moving to the next level. Classes ending in 01 are reserved for children ages 3-5, classes ending in 02 are reserved for children ages 6-8, and classes ending in 03 are reserved for children ages 9-14 .

Parent & Tot (P&T) - Provides a joyful, loving, child-centered environment featuring songs and activities to encourage skill acquisition while also developing a lifelong love of the water. NOTES: Parents are required to be in the water with the student. Swim diapers are required. Ages: 9 months - 2 years.
Swim 101/102/103 (Beginner) - Focuses on kicking, floating and breath control. Must be able to swim 15 feet with their face in the water in order to pass the class. Recommended for students who have never taken a swim lesson before, are uncomfortable in the water, or have aged out of the P&T course. Ages: 101 (3-5), 102 (6-8), 103 (9-14).
Swim 201/202/203 (Swim Strokes) - Intermediate course focusing on the formal strokes of freestyle (front crawl) with side breathing and backstroke. Must have passed one of the 100 level courses, or be comfortable with submerging under the water three times in a row and swimming 15-25 feet on their front without adult support or assistance. Ages: 201 (3-5), 202 (6-8), 203 (9-14).
Swim 301/302/303 (Advanced Swim Strokes) - Focuses on the more complex breaststroke and butterfly. Students will also refine and master freestyle and backstroke. Must have passed one of the 200 level courses, or be able to independently swim freestyle with side breathing and backstroke for 25 ft. Ages: 301 (3-5), 302 (6-8), 303 (9-14).
Swim 401/402/403 (Lifesaving Swim Strokes) - Designed to teach the lifesaving skills such as sidestroke, elementary backstroke and treading. All four previous strokes will be included, with refinement and mastering of the breaststroke and butterfly.Must have passed one of the 300 level courses, or be able to perform freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly independently for 30 ft. Ages: 401 (3-5), 402 (6-8), 403 (9-14).

  • WPRD is excited to be offering more FREE SWIM LESSONS this summer for City Residents! Weekday Lessons at the 100 and 200 levels are FREE for Session 1 and Session 2. Saturday Lessons at the 100 and 200 levels are FREE for Session 1.

Competitive Swim Training - Designed for swimmers ages 7-18 that have completed the highest level of swim lessons and want to expand their skills into a swim team setting. Students will learn competitive swimming skills through the use of interval training. Must be able to swim laps (25-50 meters) and be proficient in all competitive strokes.

Adult Swim Lessons - Have you wanted to learn how to swim or to just work on the basics? If so, adult swim lessons are for you! This new program creates a fun environment for adult beginners who want to learn how to swim. Ages: 18+.

  • Fee: $25  RDF: $22  (4 lessons, Mondays or Wednesdays or Saturdays)

Junior Lifeguarding Camp

Too young to become a lifeguard? Get a head start with Junior Lifeguard Camp! This multi-day camp lets you explore the many aspects of lifeguarding while also learning about CPR/First Aid and earning your Junior Lifeguarding Certification. A swimsuit, towel, snack and change of clothes are required. Must be an independent swimmer!

Training Programs

Scuba - Try Dive

Have you ever wondered what it's like to breathe underwater? If you want to find out, but aren't quite ready to take the plunge into a scuba certification course, the Try Dive program is for you! During the course, you will learn:

  • - What wearing scuba equipment feels like and how easy it is to move around underwater while wearing it.
  • - What it's like to breathe underwater.
  • - Basic skills and safety rules in shallow water that will carry over to a full scuba certification course, if you so choose.

Fee: $55. Registration MUST be done in person at the Rec Center, as there is signed paperwork required. Ages 12+.

Scuba - Open Water Certification

Get your scuba diving certification with the PADI Open Water Diver course - the world's most popular and widely recognized scuba course. Discover the wonders of the aquatic world through this course! Must have adequate swimming skills and good physical health. No prior experience with scuba diving is required. The course consists of three main phases:

  • - Knowledge Development (online, independent study) - Understand basic principles of scuba diving
  • - Confined Water Dives - Learn basic scuba skills
  • - Open Water Dives - Use skills and explore

Fee: $285 due at registration, $217 due at a later date for the online portion. Registration MUST be done in person at the Rec Center, as there is signed paperwork required. Ages 10+.
