What is a RDF? In recognition that City of Winchester residents support our department through their city taxes, the City offers residents a discounted fee (RDF). Non-residents pay the regular fee for lessons, training classes, and rentals.


Indoor Pool

Winchester Parks & Recreation features a 6-lane by 25-meter competition pool that offers a wide range of lessons, classes and lap, open and therapeutic hours.

Aqua Fitness Classes Schedule

These classes focus on strength, flexibility, and reducing pain with low impact on your joints. Training may incorporate resistance tools such as water weights and noodles. Classes offered throughout the year are Water Aerobics and Aqua Arthritis. Classes are taught by a certified instructor. Ages 18+.


Pool Rentals

The Indoor Pool can be rented for groups or parties. Current maximum capacity is 40 people. Rentals are for 2 hours. 2 weeks notice is required.

Group Swim Lessons (Ages 9 months-14)

Note: All lessons are subject to minimum student enrollment and instructor/pool availability.

Swim Lessons University is a child-centered, progressive swim lesson program. Each level teaches a specific set of skills that each child will need to master before moving to the next level. Classes ending in 01 are reserved for children ages 3-5, classes ending in 02 are reserved for children ages 6-8, and classes ending in 03 are reserved for children ages 9-14 .

Parent & Tot (P&T) - Provides a joyful, loving, child-centered environment featuring songs and activities to encourage skill acquisition while also developing a lifelong love of the water. NOTES: Parents are required to be in the water with the student. Swim diapers are required. Ages: 9 months - 2 years.
Swim 101/102/103 (Beginner) - Focuses on kicking, floating and breath control. Must be able to swim 15 feet with their face in the water in order to pass the class. Recommended for students who have never taken a swim lesson before, are uncomfortable in the water, or have aged out of the P&T course. Ages: 101 (3-5), 102 (6-8), 103 (9-14).
Swim 201/202/203 (Swim Strokes) - Intermediate course focusing on the formal strokes of freestyle (front crawl) with side breathing and backstroke. Must have passed one of the 100 level courses, or be comfortable with submerging under the water three times in a row and swimming 15-25 feet on their front without adult support or assistance. Ages: 201 (3-5), 202 (6-8), 203 (9-14).
Swim 301/302/303 (Advanced Swim Strokes) - Focuses on the more complex breaststroke and butterfly. Students will also refine and master freestyle and backstroke. Must have passed one of the 200 level courses, or be able to independently swim freestyle with side breathing and backstroke for 25 ft. Ages: 301 (3-5), 302 (6-8), 303 (9-14).
Swim 401/402/403 (Lifesaving Swim Strokes) - Designed to teach the lifesaving skills such as sidestroke, elementary backstroke and treading. All four previous strokes will be included, with refinement and mastering of the breaststroke and butterfly.Must have passed one of the 300 level courses, or be able to perform freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly independently for 30 ft. Ages: 401 (3-5), 402 (6-8), 403 (9-14).

  • Fee: $49  RDF: $43 (8 weekday lessons)

Competitive Swim Training - Designed for swimmers ages 7-18 that have completed the highest level of swim lessons and want to expand their skills into a swim team setting. Students will learn competitive swimming skills through the use of interval training. Must be able to swim laps (25-50 meters) and be proficient in all competitive strokes.

Try Dive (Ages 12+)

If you want to find out what it's like to breathe underwater but aren't quite ready to take the plunge into a certification course, this program will let you try scuba to see if you like it. While not an actual scuba certification, during the Try Dive experience, you'll learn how to use scuba equipment in shallow water and get a quick and easy introduction to what it takes to explore the underwater world. During the course, you will learn:

  • What wearing scuba equipment feels like and how easy it is to move around underwater while wearing it.
  • What it's like to breathe underwater.
  • Basic skills and safety rules in shallow water that will carry over to a full scuba certification course, if you so choose.

Open Water Scuba Diving (Ages 10+)

Get your scuba diving certification with the PADI* Open Water Diver course - the world's most popular and widely recognized scuba course. Discover the wonders of the aquatic world through this course. Must have adequate swimming skills and good physical health. No prior experience with scuba diving is required. The course consists of three main phases:

  1. Knowledge Development (online, independent study) - Understand basic principles of scuba diving
  2. Confined Water Dives - Learn basic scuba skills
  3. Open Water Dives - Use skills and explore (Note: Cost of open water dives not included)

Fee: $275 due at registration, $202 due at a later date for the online portion

Outdoor Pool - Closed for the season. Reopening May 2022.

The outdoor pool is open daily during the summer season.

This facility has eight 50-meter lanes in the main pool and six 25-yard lanes in the diving well (depth varies from 3.5 feet to 11.5 feet). The main pool also has a 30-foot tall tube slide and a one-meter spring board. The zero depth entry baby pool includes a water feature (maximum depth 1.5 feet).

Outdoor Special Events

Join us for fun at the pool! 

7th Annual Splash Bash
Let's kick off summer with a splash! Come enjoy the newly refurbished slide, diving board, and wading pool. A DJ will be playing your favorite tunes and the concession stand will be open. There will be door prizes including one individual month membership!

Swim In Movie - Luca
Swim in for a movie at the pool! For one night only, inflatables will be allowed in the pool. The concession stand will be open and will have a limited supply of inflatable inner tubes and glow sticks for purchase.

Christmas in July
Enjoy Christmas fun under the sun at the outdoor pool! There will be games and plenty of Christmas cheer. Food will be available for purchase at the concession stand. A jolly special guest might even make an appearance!

Swim Under the Stars
Experience the pool at night and swim under the stars! There will be music and the concession stand will be open.

*Canine Swim
This year we are partnering with Frederick County Parks & Recreation to end summer with a canine splash! Join us at Clearbrook Park for the Annual Picnic and Pool Pawty on September 10. There will be vendors, demonstrations, and of course dog swimming! All proceeds will benefit the Esther Boyd Animal Shelter.

Lifeguards needed

Lifeguard Training (Ages 15+)

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training teaches participants the skills and knowledge they will need to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies. With successful completion, participants will be certified for lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid for two years. Attendance is mandatory at all sessions.

Lifeguard Recertification (Ages 15+)

This course is designed for lifeguards who currently have a valid certification and need to renew. Participants must complete the water skills, CPR/AED skills and score higher than 80% on a written test in order to pass.

Learn to recognize and respond to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. With successful completion, participants will be certified in CPR/AED/First Aid for two years.

Red Cross Babysitting Class (11-18)

This course will prepare participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to watch and care for children and infants. The curriculum will cover leadership, safety and first aid, understanding children, and what to do in an emergency. Upon successful completion (score at least 80% on the written exams), the participant will receive a certification from the American Red Cross in babysitting and pediatric CPR/First Aid. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory.
