It's game time!  Winchester Parks and Recreation (WPRD) offers many athletic programs and leagues that will keep you moving and having fun.

All registrations are now being processed through CommunityPass! Individuals and Families are required to create an account in order to register for programs, process memberships, and request facilities. RDF: Resident Discount Fee

What is a RDF? In recognition that City of Winchester residents support our department through their city taxes, the City offers residents a discounted fee (RDF). Non-residents pay the regular fee for programs and leagues.


Athletic Summer Camps

Note: All WPRD Athletic Summer Camps are co-ed.

Basketball Camp: Lace up your high tops and get ready for an exciting week of basketball. This camp gives each player a chance to learn the basics and improve their skills. Camp is instructed by John Handley High School Basketball Head Coach, Zach Harrell-Zook.

Basketball Camp + Extended Hours: This camp includes our morning basketball camp AND afternoons at Jim Barnett Park! Extended hours are offered for your child to participate in a variety of fun activities in the park like swimming at the outdoor pool, playing disc golf on the Jim Barnett Course and other fun activities to occupy the rest of their day after the camp concludes at 1 p.m. Campers opting for extended hours will be supervised by WPRD Athletic Assistants. Campers must be picked up at Jim Barnett Park by 4 p.m. daily.

Soccer Camps: Come out to the soccer field and learn the fundamentals of soccer. Participants will learn to dribble, kick, pass, and shoot while having fun playing games. Camp is instructed by Shenandoah University Head Men's Soccer Coach, Brandon Kates.

Athlete Performance Training: Athletes can improve their maximum potential through hard work, dedication, and a focus on proper form and technique. Directed by nationally-recognized speed and conditioning expert, Ken Minifield. Ken is a former wide receiver for both the New Jersey Generals and the New York Giants; qualified for the US Olympic Team in 1984 for the 100 meters; and has trained many professional, college, high school and masters athletes.

Volleyball Camp: Are you ready to bump, set, spike? Then come out to our volleyball camp. Participants will learn the fundamentals of volleyball and other key skills to improve their game. Camp is instructed by Go Volley Director, Nemanja Rozgic.

Tennis Camp: For players who are beginners to intermediate. The camp will teach participants the basic fundamentals in stroke production (forehand, backhand, volley, serve and smash), court movement, and basic footwork skills. All participants will have a great time playing and learning the number one racket sport. Camp is instructed by John Handley High School Tennis Head Coach, Dan Jones. Campers need to bring a tennis racquet and tennis shoes.

Football Camp: Ever wanted to learn how to throw a football like a pro? Join us for our football camp and learn all of the basic fundamentals of this intense sport. Bring cleats. Camp is instructed by Under Armour Rise Flag Football Commissioner, Russ Bolden along with other elite coaches and players.

Girls' and Boys' Sports Camp: Looking for a way to keep your kids entertained this summer? Kids will experience a week of pure fun by combining a range of games/ sports with social development in a safe setting. Camp is led by Frederick Douglass Elementary School "Teacher of the Year", PE teacher Andrew Divico.

Esports Summer Camps

Don’t miss this exciting camp that will introduce you to the world of Esports. Esports, short for Electronic Sports, is a form of competition using video games. This camp is perfect for first time gamers or anyone that is interested in learning more about Esports. Each day will be spent working on various gaming components to help you level up your skills. Universities have developed programs and scholarships for Esports and many high schools have also incorporated Esports by adding it as a competitive varsity sport. All campers will receive a t-shirt, certificate of completion, and a membership to GUI Esports Gaming Center.

Wrestling

This clinic is designed to teach participants the fundamentals and skills to become a wrestling champion! Open to all skill levels. Clinic is instructed by James Wood Middle School Head Wrestling Coach, Lance Perry.

Fencing (Ages 8 - 13)

WPRD is now offering fencing; one of the original sports held in the Olympic Games. The clinic is led by Tom Jobson, member of the United States Fencing Association. This course is for people of all skill levels. Come out and join WPRD for a new and exciting experience. Equipment is available for a one-time rental fee of $15 payable to the instructor.

Athletics Clinics - Teen & Adult

Intro to Fly Fishing

Leading the course are certified Fly-Fishing instructors, Mary Weiss and Burr Tupper. The introductory Fly Fishing course includes three, two-hour classroom sessions, structured as a hands-on experience, where you will learn about fly rods & reels, fly lines, fish identification, basic entomology for fly selection, when & where to fish, safety, knot tying, and a live fly-casting demonstration and resources for the Virginia fly fisher. *Children 10 years of age and up are welcome if accompanied by a parent attending the course.

Fencing (Ages 14+)

Players will go beyond-the-basics focusing on game strategy and development of skills including dinks, serves & returns, 3rd-shot drops, lobs, volleys, and more. The clinic is taught by PPR Certified Pro Instructor, Michele Spahr.

This clinic is designed for the intermediate level player and requires a solid understanding of game rules and scoring. Students will run through a variety of drills designed for the advanced level player development. Tournaments, Races, Events & Trips

Family Fishing Rodeo: Join us on Saturday, June 17 for the annual Family Day Fishing Rodeo! Prizes will be awarded in eight divisions for the largest fish. VA State Fishing regulations apply. A special stocking is scheduled prior to the rodeo. Register in advance or day-of. This event is sponsored by Wilkins Trust Fund.

Gym Drop In Play Schedule

During Drop In Play, the gym is available at the below times to anyone wanting to drop by the Recreation Center to play the designated sport. Equipment is available if needed. This is not a league or program. Organized practices of any kind are not permitted during Drop In Play times. Anyone entering the gym must pay the daily fee or have a punch pass/membership. Schedule is subject to change based on gym availability. Children under 12 must be supervised by an adult 18 years of age or older at all times. Children 12 and up may enter without an adult.

Outdoor Pickleball

During the warmer months, 4 lined outdoor courts are available for use free of charge on a first-come, first served basis, unless reserved for a class or event. . A key for equipment can be checked out at the Rec Center.

Racquetball

The Rec Center has one indoor court that can be used for racquetball or wallyball. Court reservations can be made seven calendar days in advance for no more than two hours at a time. Reservations are recommended. Open daily during Rec Center hours. Spectators are not permitted.

Fitness Room

The Rec Center Fitness Room provides weights, dumbbells, barbells, machines, treadmills, and ellipticals. Ages 14-16 must be accompanied by an adult 18+. Spectators are not permitted. Attire must follow WPRD fitness policy, and all policies are strictly enforced. Open daily during Rec Center hours to participants ages 14+.

Disc Golf

WPRD's 18-hole disc golf course is located within Jim Barnett Park and is available to play for FREE! Discs are available at the Rec Center, if needed. The course meanders through 170 acres of park land and boasts a balance of long, challenging holes and short, strategic holes. Tee boxes are clearly marked with full-color hole maps and permanent colored squares in the concrete. Scorecards are available for download online.

 


 

Youth sports officials needed

WPRD is seeking youth sports officials and volunteer coaches for flag football, basketball, cheerleading, indoor soccer and volleyball leagues. Games are played weeknights and weekends. Flexible schedule is a must. Sports official applicants must be at least 16 years old, have reliable transportation, possess the ability to interact well with adults and youth, and possess the ability to understand and apply sport-specific rules. Officiating experience preferred but not required. Pay: $20 per game. Click here for more information.
