National Trails Day

Spend Your Saturday Morning on the Trails!

Join us on Saturday, June 4th to explore three beautiful spots along the Green Circle Trail. Complete a Trail Stop Passport for your chance to win a 1-month individual membership to the Rec Center! 

A Winchester Parks & Recreation Info Booth will be available at all 3 locations - stop by to pick up free giveaways, learn about upcoming events, and participate in the Trail Stop Passport activity.

Abrams Creek Wetlands Preserve

8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Nature Walk with Jim Smith This morning walk focuses on birds, migration, and flowers in the Wetlands. Meet at the trailhead on Jubal Early Dr. near the Handley Avenue/Meadow Branch Drive intersection. Walk will be approximately 2 hours long. Bring water, hat and binoculars if possible.

9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Plein Air Painting and Demonstration with David Sipp Plein air painting, or painting landscapes outdoors, is the perfect way to get out of your indoor artistic environment. Bring your own supplies and learn new techniques from the instructor!

9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Nature Photography Talk with Bernie Lewis This is a great opportunity to see examples of outdoor nature photography. Stop by to ask questions and learn ways to get even better images on your next hike or outing.

Wilkins Lake

9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Nature Journaling with Laura Totis Learn what supplies you need for nature journaling as well as how to explore and learn ecosystems. Free journals will be available, including information about nature journaling programs offered through Winchester Parks and Recreation!

9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation Display The Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District works to protect local water quality and you can too! Learn about watersheds, how water moves and what it can pick up along the way. Discover how pollutants from your home, car and more can impact waterways in Winchester, The Shenandoah River and beyond. Activities are kid and family friendly!

Museum of the Shenandoah Valley

8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Outdoor Yoga with Shirley Dunsmore Meet at the stone circle at the top of the hill. Please bring a yoga mat and water. 

10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Storytelling with Sandra Scott Family friendly stories and activities for all to enjoy!

Summer Movies 

Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy a movie under the stars on Festival Field. Showings begin at dusk (approximately 8:30 p.m.) Movies are free and concessions will be available for purchase. In the case of rain, the movie will be moved indoors to the gym.

Family Day Fishing Rodeo

Join us on Saturday, June 18 for the annual Family Day Fishing Rodeo! Prizes will be awarded in eight divisions for the largest fish. VA State Fishing regulations apply. A special stocking is scheduled prior to the rodeo. Register in advance or day-of. This event is sponsored by Wilkins Trust Fund.

July 3 Fireworks at Jim Barnett Park 

Fireworks return to the PARK! Join us on Sunday, July 3rd for a spectacular fireworks show. Bring a chair, grab a treat from our specialty food vendors, and enjoy an evening with friends and family. The outdoor pool will be open until 8:30 p.m. For baseball fans, the Winchester Royals will be playing a doubleheader at Bridgeforth Stadium and admission is free! Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:20 p.m.

Outdoor Pool Special Events

Join us for fun at the pool! 

7th Annual Splash Bash
Let's kick off summer with a splash! Come enjoy the newly refurbished slide, diving board, and wading pool. A DJ will be playing your favorite tunes and the concession stand will be open. There will be door prizes including one individual month membership!

Swim In Movie - Luca
Swim in for a movie at the pool! For one night only, inflatables will be allowed in the pool. The concession stand will be open and will have a limited supply of inflatable inner tubes and glow sticks for purchase.

Christmas in July
Enjoy Christmas fun under the sun at the outdoor pool! There will be games and plenty of Christmas cheer. Food will be available for purchase at the concession stand. A jolly special guest might even make an appearance!

Swim Under the Stars
Experience the pool at night and swim under the stars! There will be music and the concession stand will be open.

*Canine Swim
This year we are partnering with Frederick County Parks & Recreation to end summer with a canine splash! Join us at Clearbrook Park for the Annual Picnic and Pool Pawty on September 10. There will be vendors, demonstrations, and of course dog swimming! All proceeds will benefit the Esther Boyd Animal Shelter.
