National Avenue Project Open House

The City of Winchester is planning to construct some significant improvements later this year that would realign sections of National Avenue/East Lane/Piccadilly Street.  These improvements will improve safety on this major roadway into downtown and allow for the installation of landscaping enhancements.

Self Defense Classes Offered by WPD

The Winchester Police Department is offering two Women's Self Defense classes. The Women's Self Defense II (Advanced) class will be held on March 25th from 6 - 9 p.m. The Women's Self Defense I (Basic) class will be held April 15th from 6 - 9 p.m. The classes are held at the Timbrook Public Safety Center.

Questions about Local Mailing

Local residents have been receiving a letter from Home Emergency Insurance Solutions referencing their water service line. 
The company, which is located in Connecticut, is selling water line insurance protection.  Some Winchester residents have asked if the mailing is coming from the City of Winchester and have expressed concerns to officials in City Hall.   As the letter states, Home Emergency Insurance Solutions is “an independent company separate from your local utility or community” and is not affiliated with the City local government.

Number of Accidents Decline in the City

The Winchester Police Department has sent a message to residents and visitors of the city to take their personal safety seriously when behind the wheel, and statistics show the message is being heard.  According to statistics that meet Department of Motor Vehicles reporting standards in 2013 there was a 34 percent decrease in traffic crashes in Winchester from 2012 to 2013.  There were no fatal accidents in 2013 and crashes involving injury dropped 36 percent.  Alcohol related crashes involving injury fell 92 percent from 2012 to 2013.  Crashes that resulted in injury and were found to be s

Cork Street Enhancement Project

The City of Winchester is planning to improve the sidewalks along the south side of East Cork Street from Pleasant Valley to East Lane (2,000 linear feet). 
A project has been proposed to partner with six property owners on Cork Street to upgrade their fencing and possibly widen the sidewalk to create a safer route for our pedestrians.

Snow removal efforts continue

The City is continuing to dig out of the large storm that dumped approximately 20 inches of snow on the Winchester area this week. Snow crews have been working 12-hour shifts around the clock since Wednesday evening and are now focusing on clearing the smaller secondary streets.

City declares state of emergency

At 4:00 am this morning, City Manager Dale Iman made a Declaration of Emergency for the City of Winchester.  Accordingly, Snow Plan “B” is in effect and Snow Plan “C” will be implemented this afternoon at 4:00 pm.  Additionally, all non-essential services are cancelled and the Emergency Operations Center will begin operations at noon today.

Statewide tornado drill scheduled for March 11th

On Saturday, January 11, 2013 three tornadoes struck southeastern Virginia. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries but property damage did occur. This speaks to the fact that weather patterns are changing and that there is no tornado season in Virginia. To help increase awareness, a statewide tornado drill has been scheduled for March 11, 2014 at 9:45 am.
The City of Winchester government offices will participate in this exercise and evaluate their state of preparedness following the drill.
