Overview

Winchester Parks and Recreation (WPRD) offers many athletic programs, leagues, and fitness opportunities that will keep you moving and having fun.

All registrations are processed through CommunityPass! Individuals and Families are required to create an account in order to register for programs. Phone registrations will not be taken.

Youth Programs

Winchester Parks and Recreation partners with a number of local organizations to provide quality recreational sports and enrichment opportunities. Leagues include baseball, flag football, tackle football and cheerleading, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, bmx, and swimming. Visit our Park Partners page for details.

Youth Fencing

WPRD offers fencing; one of the original sports held in the Olympic Games. The clinic is led by Tom Jobson, member of the United States Fencing Association. This clinic is for people of all skill levels. Come out and join us for a new and exciting experience. Equipment is available for a one-time rental fee of $15 payable to the instructor.

Laser Tag League

Get ready for this new and exciting program! Join us for 8 action-packed weeks featuring different challenges each Monday night. Funtastic Games is hosting and will help deliver EPIC fun with a WOW factor immersive experience.

Summer Camps

Sports Summer Camp registration opens April 1, 2024.

For City Residents (22601), register by May 24 at 8:00 a.m. and receive 50% off the price of the registration fee!

Basketball Camp

Lace up your high tops and get ready for an exciting week of basketball. This camp gives each player a chance to learn the basics and improve their skills. Camp is instructed by John Handley Basketball staff.

Ages: 7-14

Basketball Skills Camp

Each player will be introduced to proven methods used by players of all ages from all over the world, including NBA players. There will be a balance of individual skill enhancement as well as game development. Camp is lead by certified I'm Possible Trainer and Coach, Chris Troxell.

Football Camp

Ever wanted to learn how to throw a football like a pro? Join us for our football camp on our NEW turf fields and learn all of the basic fundamentals of this intense sport. Camp is instructed by Under Armour Rise Flag Football Commissioner, Russ Bolden along with other elite coaches and players.

Girls' and Boys' Sports Camp

Looking for a way to keep your kids entertained this summer? Kids will experience a week of pure fun by combining a range of games/ sports with social development in a safe setting. Camp is led by Frederick Douglass Elementary School teacher of the year, Andrew Divico.

Soccer Camp

Come out to the NEW turf fields and learn the fundamentals of soccer. Participants will learn to dribble, kick, pass, and shoot while having fun playing games. Camp is instructed by Shenandoah University Head Men's Soccer Coach, Brandon Kates.

Tennis Camp

For players who are beginners to intermediate. The camp will teach participants the basic fundamentals in stroke production (forehand, backhand, volley, serve, and smash), court movement, and basic footwork skills. All participants will have a great time playing and learning the #1 racket sport! Camp is instructed by John Handley Tennis Head Coach Dan Jones.

Requirements:

  • Bring a tennis racquet.
  • Wear tennis shoes.

Volleyball Camp

Are you ready to bump, set, and spike? Then come out to our volleyball camp. Participants will learn the fundamentals of volleyball and other key skills to improve their game. Camp is instructed by Go Volley Director, Nemanja Rozgic.

Wrestling Camp

This clinic is designed to teach participants the fundamentals and skills to become a wrestling champion! Open to all skill levels. Clinic is instructed by James Wood Middle School Head Wrestling Coach, Lance Perry.

Kickball

This co-ed league is played like the elementary school game you remember - the one with the big red playground ball. It's an easy game that is open to all skill levels. Even YOU can be a kickball superstar!

Ultimate Frisbee

Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of Ultimate is played by two seven player squads with a high-tech plastic disc on a field similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. Teams of 7 participants minimum, 14 participants maximum per team.

This clinic is for beginner level players with no experience required. Students will learn scoring, general rules, strategies and the core fundamentals including dinks, serves & returns, 3rd shot drops, volleys and more. The Class will be taught by PPR Certified Pro Instructor, Michele Spahr.

Pickleball Beyond the Basics

This clinic is designed for the intermediate level player. Players will go beyond the basics focusing on game strategy and development of skills including dinks, serves & returns, 3rd shot drops, lobs, volleys and more. The Class will be taught by PPR Certified Pro Instructor, Michele Spahr.

Adult Bicycling Clinic

If you already know how to ride a bike, but would like to sharpen your riding skills, this is the clinic for you! We will review important bicycle safety information and practice basic skills in a safe parking lot environment. We will also do some riding in the park on low traffic roads to practice what we learned. This clinic is for riders 18+ and you will need your own bike in good working condition, a helmet, closed toed shoes, and water to drink. All participants must sign a liability waiver.

Two-Day Advanced Pickleball Clinic

Two-day intensive pickleball clinic for advanced pickleball players (3.5-4.5). Sign up with a partner or as a single. In-depth focus on both skill improvement and competition performance. 8 hours on court instruction and monitored play. 2 hours of classroom instruction on winning strategy and game prep. Clinic is led by Certified PPR Instructors, Michele Spahr and Steve Emmons.

The daily visit fee or membership applies to all fitness programs and indoor amenities. Outdoor Play locations may be used free of charge.

Zumba

Zumba: Enjoy a total body workout using the most popular music. Zumba burns calories, tones muscles, improves balance, and incorporates a full range of motion.

Zumba Toning: All the fun of Zumba with the addition of light weights for a total body workout.

Drop In Play

During Drop In Play, the gymnasium is available at to anyone wanting to drop by the Recreation Center to play the designated sport. Equipment is available if needed. Anyone entering the gym must pay the daily fee or have a membership. Schedule is subject to change based on gym availability.

  • This is not a league or program.
  • Organized practices of any kind are not permitted during Drop In Play times.
  • Children are not permitted (as spectators or players) during sessions designated "Highschool+" and will be required to leave the gym.
  • Designated sports are seasonal.

*For sessions designated "All Ages", children under 12 must be supervised by an adult 18 years of age or older at all times. Children 12 and up may enter without an adult.

Open Gym

During Open Gym, the gymnasium is available for athletic and/or fitness activities on an individual basis. Anyone entering the gym must pay the daily fee or have a membership. Schedule is subject to change based on gym availability.

  • Monday - Friday, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
  • No session 4/19, 4/26 

Racquetball

The Rec Center has one indoor court that can be used for racquetball, wallyball, or badminton. Court reservations can be made seven calendar days in advance for no more than two hours at a time. Reservations are recommended.

  • Open daily during Rec Center hours.
  • Spectators are not permitted.

Fitness Room

The Rec Center "Work Zone" Fitness Room provides weights, dumbbells, barbells, machines, treadmills, and ellipticals. The main room was completely renovated in Fall 2023 and an additional room will be added in late Spring 2024.

  • Open daily during Rec Center hours to participants ages 14+.
  • Ages 14-16 must be accompanied by an adult 18+.
  • Spectators are not permitted without prior WPRD approval.
  • Attire must follow WPRD fitness policy, and all policies are strictly enforced.

Outdoor Play

Outdoor Pickleball

During the warmer months, 10 lined outdoor courts are available for use free of charge on a first-come, first served basis, unless reserved for a class or event. A key for equipment can be checked out at the Rec Center.

3 full outdoor courts are available for use free of charge on a first-come, first served basis, unless reserved for a class or event.

Disc Golf

WPRD's 18-hole disc golf course is located within Jim Barnett Park and is available to play for FREE! Discs are available at the Rec Center, if needed. The course meanders through 170 acres of park land and boasts a balance of long, challenging holes and short, strategic holes. Tee boxes are clearly marked with full-color hole maps and permanent colored squares in the concrete.
