The City of Winchester and Jim Barnett Park have implemented a weather alert system that warns when lightning and other potentially dangerous weather conditions are imminent.

Similar to a tornado warning siren, people in and around Jim Barnett Park, up to a mile away, will hear audible tones accompanied by a strobe light, indicating that lightning has been detected within an 8-mile radius and they should seek shelter. Five short tones will indicate that it is safe to resume activity outdoors thirty minutes after the last detected lightning strike. The audible alert will only be operational between 5:30 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.

“Safety is our top priority. This new system ensures that players, coaches, families, and all of our park visitors are kept informed and protected against sudden weather changes, particularly lightning strikes,” said Parks and Recreation Director Chris Konyar.
