Trees

Tree City USA.png
The City of Winchester is proud to be a Tree City USA for over three decades.  The Trees division is responsible for the health and safety of all trees on City streets and in the public rights-of-way.

Approved Tree Planting List

The Approved Tree Planting List(PDF, 854KB)  includes a variety of widely-acceptable trees suited for the growing conditions found in most urban areas: along streets, residential properties, parks, golf courses and other developed areas. It is not intended to be an all-inclusive list and the suggested varieties listed are focused on those that are readily available and known to perform well in our area. There are many trees, particularly native species, not included in the list which may be suitable for undeveloped sites or naturalized areas.

Right-Tree-Right-Place Program

The City of Winchester's Tree Division has teamed up with Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC) and Reading Landscapes, Inc. to create the Right-Tree-Right-Place Street Tree Canopy Program. This program is aimed at creating a safe, healthy, and attractive tree canopy through replacement of over-mature, declining trees in the public right of way that are in conflict with overhead electric lines.

Adopt-A-Tree Program

The Adopt-A-Tree Program allows residents or businesses to adopt a city-owned tree. This program was developed to help keep our urban forest thriving and to enhance the beauty of our city by encouraging the Winchester community to take a more active interest in our community's trees.

Leaf Collection

The City offers two options for disposing of fallen leaves:

  1. Curbside Vacuum Service - This option utilizes a collection schedule that divides the City into seven areas beginning with the area that is anticipated to drop leaves first and heaviest.  Crews will vacuum leaves from every street at least twice during leaf collection season.  Notices of collection dates and times will be posted in your area prior to collection.
    • Rake/blow leaves to the curb (or at least to your property line) but NOT in the gutter pan, on the street or on the sidewalk.
    • For removal by Public Works, place leaves out for collection by the start date indicated on the “No Parking” signs for your route.
    • Keep leaf piles less than 2-3 feet in height.
    • Keep leaves away from ditches, pipes, and culverts.
    • Do not put materials such as DIRT, ROCKS, METAL, and BRANCHES in the piles; these items will prevent crews from collecting your leaves, as they can damage the vacuum.
  2. "Bag-n-Go" - Bagged leaves can be placed at the curb in biodegradable PAPER bags, laundry baskets, trash cans, or other containers less than 45 gallons on your normal yard waste collection days on Wednesdays.  There is no limit to the number of bags that will be collected curbside.
