Virginia to implement Pandemic EBT program

The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) will provide Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits to families of school-age children who no longer have access to free or reduced-price school meals due to public school closures. Virginia is one of 20 states approved by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services to implement the P-EBT program, which provides temporary food assistance to cover the cost of meals missed while schools are closed.

VDSS to send text messages about Earned Income Tax Credits

The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) has begun sending text message reminders to potentially-eligible SNAP, TANF, and Medicaid enrollees from 2019. The messages will provide information about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and options for assistance.

2020 Old Town Farmers and Makers Market has been canceled

The Old Town Farmers & Makers Market, held May-September each year at the Taylor Pavilion on the Loudoun Street Mall, has been canceled for the 2020 season.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of the coming months, advanced planning for the market has been difficult,” stated Market Coordinator Sarah Acuff Chapman. “As the reopening and recovery process continues, we will reevaluate local conditions and consider offering some market events or a short season over the summer.”

Winchester needs additional Officers of Election

The Winchester Office of Elections and Voter Registration is seeking individuals to serve as Officers of Election. If you are a registered voter in the Commonwealth of Virginia, enjoy serving the public, do not hold any elective office, and are not employees of an elected official, we need you this June. 

The work on Election Day begins at 5:00 am and ends at approximately 8:00 pm. Officers are compensated $150 for working the full Election Day, plus $25 for attending the mandatory training session.

Virginia’s SNAP program to issue emergency benefits in May

Emergency benefits will be made available to Virginia Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants in May, as part of a provision set forth by the Families First Coronavirus Responses Act of 2020. Under this provision, the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) will issue the emergency benefits to any household not already receiving the maximum benefits and who are not currently repaying a prior over-issuance of SNAP benefits.

Winchester Fire and Rescue Chief resigns

Winchester Fire and Rescue Chief William Garrett has submitted his resignation effective June 2, 2020.

“After a year with the City of Winchester, I’ve decided to exercise my option to resign without prejudice,” stated Chief Garrett. “The City and the men and women in the Winchester Fire and Rescue Department have been a joy to serve.”

Chief Garrett began service with the Winchester’s Fire and Rescue Chief on June 3, 2019 after serving 30 years with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
