Regular Meeting Highlights

O-2019-31 - Bond Issuance

Council approved an ordinance authorizing the issuance and sale of General Obligation public improvement bonds for upcoming capital projects including Valley Avenue Drainage and Sidewalk Improvement Project, Hope Drive Extension, Creamery Building Renovations, Douglas Community Learning Center Renovations, and Shihadeh Innovation Center totaling $16.9 million.

FY20 street repaving program has begun

The City of Winchester began its annual street repaving program on Monday, September 9. The Fiscal Year 2020 program includes repaving on 15 different streets with an overall distance of approximately 9.00 lane miles (see list and map below). The selection process is based on an annual review of all streets in the city and criteria that includes the classification of the street, traffic volumes and the current physical condition.

Crews began work on Shenandoah, Shenandoah Place and Shawnee Avenue.

Street repaving to begin on Monday

The City of Winchester will begin repaving several streets on Monday September 9 (weather permitting). The first three streets are listed below beginning with Shenandoah Avenue. No road closures are expected and one lane will remain open to thru traffic. Please drive safely in the work zones.

Residents asked to help name new community park

As part of the South Kent Street Improvement Project completed last month, the City created a new community pocket park on the corner of E. Cecil and S. Kent at the location of the former Ruth’s Tea Room. A historic marker will be installed to honor Ruth Jackson and her restaurant that was a staple in Winchester for 80 years (see attached draft marker).

Meet the Fire and Rescue Chief Public Open House

The City of Winchester will host a “Meet the Chief” Open House on Monday, September 9 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. to provide an opportunity for community members to meet Winchester Fire and Rescue Chief, William A. Garrett. The event is open to the public and will be held in Jim Barnett Park Rec Center (Social Hall), located at 1001 East Cork Street in Winchester.

Patsy Cline concert to be held in honor of Winchester’s 275th anniversary

Relive the popular hits of country music legend and Winchester native Patsy Cline on Saturday, August 24 at 2 pm. All songs will be sung by Tracey Wygal. This new event, held in the Handley Library Auditorium, is free to attend and runs approximately 45 minutes. Offered by Winchester’s 275th anniversary celebration committee.

August Friday Night Live features local favorite

The final 2019 Friday Night Live, Old Town Winchester’s summer block party, will be held on Friday, August 16 from 5-11 pm. This popular event, held on the Loudoun Street Mall, is the perfect opportunity to meet up with friends, shop, dine, and enjoy great live music, street performers, and artisans. August’s Friday Night Live event features the return of The Robbie Limon Band performing covers from the 70s and 80s at the Taylor Pavilion. The Loudoun Street Mall will also be filled with free, live entertainment and more activities creating a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.
