Work is now underway along Abrams Creek in Winchester as part of a major environmental and infrastructure improvement project in the Christianson Familyland area of Jim Barnett Park.
The project focuses on restoring the natural stream channel, stabilizing eroding banks, and improving how stormwater flows into the creek. Over time, runoff from surrounding development has contributed to erosion, pollution, and declining water quality in Abrams Creek. These are all issues the City is now working to correct through a long-term restoration effort.
In addition to reshaping the creek and upgrading stormwater infrastructure, crews will remove invasive plant species that have taken hold along the stream corridor. These non-native plants can crowd out beneficial vegetation and worsen erosion. In their place, the City will plant only native species, which are better suited to the local environment and help stabilize soil, filter pollutants, and support wildlife.
The project is also expected to reduce localized flooding risks by slowing and better managing stormwater during heavy rain events. Restoring a more natural, meandering stream will improve both the ecological health of the creek and the resilience of the surrounding parkland.
