September Is National Preparedness Month

Published on September 01, 2026

Emergencies can happen at any time. A severe storm, fire, flood, power outage, or other incident may mean you need to act quickly. This September, take a few simple steps to help keep you and your family safe.

Make an emergency plan. Talk with everyone in your home about what to do and where to go. Choose a meeting place and an out-of-town contact person. Include plans for pets, older adults, and anyone who may need extra help.

Build an emergency kit. Keep supplies in an easy-to-carry bag or container. Include:

  • Water and nonperishable food
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • First-aid supplies and needed medications
  • Phone chargers and important documents
  • Items for babies, pets, or family members with special needs

Stay informed. Sign up for local emergency alerts and follow trusted news and weather sources. Keep your phone charged when severe weather is expected.

Check your insurance. Review your home or renter’s insurance policy. Make sure your coverage fits your needs. Remember, standard home insurance often does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance may need to be purchased separately.  Having the right insurance policy is the easiest and quickest way to recover after an emergency.  Don’t wait for a storm to check your policy.

Finally, help friends and neighbors before, during, and after an emergency. Prepared communities are safer communities.  Winchester stands ready!
