Water Service Line Material Survey

Published on November 08, 2024

To comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) revised Lead and Copper Rule, the City of Winchester has been compiling an inventory of all water service lines to identify any that may contain lead. This process is crucial for protecting public health and ensuring the continued safety of our water supply.

After reviewing available records, City staff will need to physically inspect 370 water service lines in the City to confirm their lead-free status. We have no information suggesting any danger to the public, and this action is being taken as a purely precautionary measure.

Residents whose homes are receiving water from water service lines requesting a physical inspection have received a letter via USPS requesting permission for the City to complete the inspection. This inspection may involve digging a small hole near the water line to determine the material or simply coming into the structure to take a photo of the service line where it enters from outside. Our team will work to minimize any disruption and restore the area promptly, typically within the same day. Should you want to participate and have not received a letter, please contact us at (540) 773-1340.

If lead is discovered in a nearby service line, the City will work with you to eliminate any potential health risks in accordance with EPA guidelines. Please contact us at (540) 773-1340 to schedule a convenient time for the inspection or to ask any questions you may have.  You can also view the lead service line inventory database here
