City Council unanimously approved the continued emergency closure of Boscawen Street between Indian Alley and Cameron Street last night, following the October 18 traffic accident resulting in the death of a three-year-old child at the intersection of Boscawen and Loudoun Streets on the Old Town Mall. Interim City Manager John Piper and City staff will study potential traffic and infrastructure enhancements, and work with downtown businesses and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive, long-term proposal to improve pedestrian safety on the Walking Mall and in the downtown area.

“The accident deeply impacted the community…and it was literally in the heart of the City. I can’t imagine what the family of the three-year-old child is going through,” said City Council President Corey Sullivan on behalf of the City Government. “In the days, months, weeks, and years to come, the right thing to do to memorialize the tragedy and honor the loss of life will present itself. That might not be tonight, it might not be next week, but it will happen. And we’ll be ready to support that option when it does.”

Interim City Manager Piper added, “As noted by Council President Sullivan, we know that this tragic situation is deeply traumatic, first and foremost for the family involved but also for our first responders, neighbors and businesses in Old Town, and our entire community. For that reason, we are committed to closely collaborating with community members, businesses, non-profits, and other partners to creatively explore solutions for Boscawen Street that improve pedestrian safety while maintaining the character and vitality of the City we know and love.”

The City will continue to provide regular updates to the community as this process moves forward. We encourage community members to regularly check the City’s social media channels, website, and WinConnect emails for updates.
