Inspections & Fire Code Permits

Inspections

Routine building inspections have been proven to be one of the most effective ways to prevent fires before they start.  According to the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code the Fire Marshal’s Office may inspect all structures and premises for the purpose of ascertaining and causing to be corrected any conditions liable to cause fire, contribute to the spread of fire, interfere with firefighting operations, or endanger life.  We achieve our goal by:

  • Identifying and correcting fire code violations
  • Educating business and property owners about fire and life safety
  • Reducing fire loss (helps lower insurance rates)
  • Providing less demand on public emergency services by reducing fire and life safety risks

In 2023 City Council approved a fee schedule for certain routine fire inspections. The approved fee schedule can be found below.  If you would like to schedule an inspection or have a question about your invoice, contact the Administrative Office at 540-662-2298.
